Today was rainbow cake day. Today was Abbey's day, not mine. Today was the day my baby girl became a teenager. Today was not a day that I had time to go for a run. We went out to breakfast. We went for a hike. We ate cake!
She made her own cake. She got the idea from watching a You Tube video. Yesterday I drove her and one of her friends to the store to get the supplies and then again when the frosting ran out. I gave no advice as I had none to give. I did ask constantly.... "Did you girls wash your hands?" as I watched them dip and spread and piece the thing together. I must say that inside I worried that the thing would fall apart upon cutting due to no frosting spread between the layers that she had leveled before she stacked them up.
I will admit I should not have worried. It turned out great! Frosting between the layers would have not only made it too sweet, but it would have also taken away from the bright layers that made her rainbow. I am glad I reminded them often to keep their fingers free of spit and germs as they spread with fingers at points in the construction. I am glad I was around. I am glad that was my only job, the germ police, and nothing more.
So far I like having a teenage daughter. Today I really miss my mom. She would have just really thought Abbey's rainbow cake was cool. I wish I had thought to make a rainbow cake for my birthday when I was 13... Abbey is a lot like like me, but in the same breath she is not at all. She is better. :)
Happy New Year everyone! Tomorrow I go for a nice long run!
