Why We Read…
Dear Parents,
Many of you probably know that I have successfully run two marathons this school year. I was not born a natural runner. Running has simply been a passion of mine. The more I have run, the better and stronger I have become so the more I enjoy it.
As I was telling the class about my successful Boston Marathon this last April, I reminded them that even though I have been running many years, I had to run hundreds of miles this winter and spring to prepare for that race. Most of those miles were in the dark of morning when every part of me wanted to be in my warm snuggly bed. But, I did it because I could and I wanted to do the best I could on April 21st.
What does this have to do with your child? What does this have to do with school and reading? My answer is it has everything to do with it. If your child wants to be a better reader, they need to read. If your child wants to be the best he or she can be in school, they need to practice reading. They need to read books for fun. They need to read books to learn new things and new words. They need to read to make it a habit.
I know that your child is only in 3rd grade, but soon he or she will be in 4th. Before you know it they will be hitting the adolescent years. It will be a lot easier to help your child build good habits for reading and doing homework now. Trust me, I know.
As we finish this school year, I encourage you to continue to check your child's book log each school night and sign it before it is turned in on Fridays. I also encourage you to read with your child this month and into the summer. It is fine to put books you have read together on the book log. Homework doesn't have to be this task that your child does alone in a quiet room to have it be meaningful. We have had some sweet times this school year as I have read aloud to the class. I promise you won't regret that time with your child.
Finally, I want to thank you for the honor of being your child's teacher this year. They are a wonderful bunch of scholars just bursting with potential. Let's make May the best month of 3rd grade so we know that we all finished strong.
Sincerely,
Jana McKee
