Tired Legs - Happy Me

Today I ran without looking at my Garmin to monitor my pace.  I had a rough idea that out to DPHS and back was going to get me to my magic 20 mark.  I kept the Garmin mostly under the sleeve of my shirt and  kept the music low enough so I could hear the clicks when another mile clicked off. When I did look at it, it was only to verify that it was on or how much distance was left until I would hear the next click.  I didn't look at my speed really at all.   Why?   I wanted  to just run by feel.  No tempo, no hard effort.  I just wanted to run a good steady pace.  The first 16 miles were almost effortless.  The last 4 were a little more mental work.  For the most part, it felt like a 9:30 mile pace, but it wasn't. The last two miles my legs were hurting.  I assumed that my pace had slowed significantly... but it didn't.  I kept on keeping on.  Th computer from my wrist told me so.  When all was said and done, 20.4 miles with an average pace of 9:12 which included starting my watch before I even stepped out the door to start running, some of my stops at the stop lights, and a couple stops at the drinking fountains at La Colina.  Not bad.  Now why do my legs hurt so much?  I don't think I am taking my slippers or snuggle pants off today.  My legs need to slumber after their hilly little adventure.
